This cabinet, mounted on a Nationwide Access boom lift and sealed to the surface of the Northern Bank headquarters in Belfast City centre, represents a revolutionary new approach to blast cleaning.

The cabinet was designed and built by the cleaning contractors, Global Stone, to address a number of problems associated with the exterior cleaning of buildings, particularly in busy town centres.

Instead of the traditional approach of using unsightly scaffolding and sheeting, which still fails to prevent dust from escaping into the environment, Global Stone have developed a dust extraction cabinet which is used in conjunction with a powered access platform.

The combination of the cabinet and the Nationwide boom lift means that Global Stone can complete the cleaning work in a far quicker and more environmentally-friendly manner, with minimal inconvenience to the passing public.

Nationwide Access worked with Global Stone and the boom manufacturers to ensure that the cabinet could be attached to the boom without affecting its safe operation.

The dust enclosure system totally encapsulates the working area and houses an operator wearing breathing apparatus. The dust is taken through a chute to ground level where it is filtered.

For the contract at the Northern Bank, Nationwide¹s Belfast depot supplied an S85 boom which has a 91 foot working height, so ensuring that the cabinet could reach all areas of the building. An articulating jib on the end of the diesel-powered boom enabled Global Stone to perfectly position the cabinet for sealing to the walls of the bank.
