Nationwide
Machines Provide Remedy For Hospital Access Problem
Powered
access machines from Nationwide operated alongside traditional
scaffolding when they were hired by Allmass Cladding Systems
for specific high level work at a new NHS hospital under
construction in South Wales.
The
main contractors, Tilbury Douglas Construction, have had
system scaffolding erected around all sides of the Neath
Port Talbot General Hospital but Allmass turned to a Nationwide
AB62 articulating boom to ensure they could gain rapid access
to high level areas of the building which otherwise would
have been difficult to reach safely.
With
a working height of 20.9m and an outreach of 10.7m, the
four-wheel-drive boom enabled Allmass to get men and materials
quickly into position.
"We
needed the boom lift to gain access to curved roof features
which overhang the building beyond the system scaffolding
and which could not otherwise be reached easily or safely.
The modular format of system scaffolding does not lend itself
to this type of work because it cannot provide the flexibility
or versatility of powered access," said Allmass project
construction manager Wayne Wheadon.
Allmass
are installing composite roof and wall cladding panels at
the hospital, together with all fascias, flashings and rainwater
goods. The company used the Nationwide boom to install flashings
and other smaller items in high level areas such as the
hospitalšs turret roof, and also hired Nationwide XRT27
and MRT26 scissor lifts to install interior cladding.
The
new hospital is being built under a Private Finance Initiative
and is due to open in December 2002.
