SKYLIFT GOES SKY-HIGH AT GOONHILLY DOWNS

SKYLIFT GOES SKY-HIGH
AT GOONHILLY DOWNS

When Surrey-based Cellular Design Services were appointed to conduct a radio survey for the planned Airwave emergency services mast at Goonhilly Earth Station in Cornwall, the company needed to be sure it employed a partner with enough elevation to position a temporary antennae at the correct height. Fortunately, Cellular Design found the solution in the lofty 72-metre Skylift T72B truck mounted boom from Nationwide Access, the country's largest powered access rental company. The work was completed in just one day.

The Skylift T72B - a popular choice for both line-of-site and telecommunications work - provided Cellular Design with a 2.2-metre by1.25-metre platform that was easily manoeuvred into position and was precisely the right working height. This enabled the company to place the temporary antennae on the basket, as close as possible to the final position of the planned mast, so that Cellular Design could undertake the necessary signal strength testing.

The Goonhilly Earth Station, situated near Helston on the Lizard Peninsula, is the largest satellite earth station in the world with over 60 dishes on-site; the first was built in 1962 to track the Telstar satellite. The station daily handles millions of international telephone calls, emails and television broadcasts and is the ideal location to demonstrate Skylift's suitability for telecoms and line-of-site work.

Nationwide's Skylift fleet is the largest of its kind in the UK and much of its popularity is due to the truck-mounts' ability to be moved on and off site quickly and, perhaps equally importantly, to be operational within minutes of arriving on site. Working heights span from 14 metres to the T72B's 72 metres. To make it easier to reach even the most challenging sites, many of the vehicles in the Skylift fleet are four-wheel-drive, all-terrain vehicles.

This was not the first Cellular Design project to use a Nationwide solution. The company also undertakes extensive line-of-site work and has previously used a number of Skylift truck-mounts. While hire of these units can be arranged through any of Nationwide's 50 depots, six specialist Skylift depots are strategically located throughout the country.

Nationwide is the UK's leading powered access rental company and is part of the publicly quoted Lavendon Group Plc. The company is headquartered in Lutterworth, Leicestershire. The Group is also the European market leader in the powered access rental business, trading under the name Zooom in Germany, France, Spain and Austria
