A large fleet of powered access platforms from Nationwide Access, the UK's leading access hire company, is at work on a massive new bridge linking Gatwick Airport's new Pier 6 with the airport's North Terminal.
The 32 m high passenger bridge - the first in the UK and the largest of its kind in the World - will span a live taxiway with aircraft as big as a Boeing 747-400 able to pass beneath it.
The client, BAA, appointed Nationwide as principal supplier of access equipment on this project, with the result that every subcontractor, from cladding installers to steel erectors and electricians, are using Nationwide's machines.
"We're supplying everything from small scissor lifts to 40m self-propelled booms on this job", says Nationwide's project manager Julie Wallace. "We have planned for 1,200 machine-weeks, which means that we have about 60 machines on site at any one time", she adds.
With an on-site service depot and full time staff sharing the site office with project manager Mace, Nationwide is providing round-the-clock maintenance and training services throughout the duration of the contract.
Construction of the steel-framed bridge began in February and is due for completion towards the end of this year.
Make and models of machines include Genie S125 44 m cherrypickers, Upright's X26 small scissor lifts and Listlux LL20X big scissors lifts.
