Building services contractor N G Bailey is using two electric scissor lifts from the Manchester depot of Nationwide Access to install mechanical and electrical equipment at the new Manchester Academy.
One of the government's new breed of City Academies, combining secondary education with adult evening classes and community learning activities, Manchester Academy is being built by main contractor Bowmer & Kirkland on land adjoining the existing Ducie High School in the Moss Side district of the city.
The new Academy comprises a main building of about 7,000 sq m over three storeys, plus a separate 2,500 sq m Sixth Form wing.
"It's quite a fancy building, with lots of glass and open areas", comments Bailey's electrical engineer Greg Chapples. Design of the heating, lighting and ventilation systems are hence vital to maintaining the right internal environment in the building.
"We have used two 8 m scissor lifts from Nationwide to help us install equipment in the sports hall and lecture theatres", says Greg. The machines enable Bailey's staff to work safely and quickly and avoid them having to manhandle cumbersome scaffold towers or ladders.
Bailey will complete the building services installation in the main building by Christmas, with the Sixth Form wing due for completion by Easter.
