Nationwide Access has helped structural engineer James Killelea solve an unusual access problem on the construction site at UMIST's Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre at Princess Street in the city centre.
Killelea needed a lightweight machine that could lift atrium steelwork from a narrow mezzanine floor to a height of 30 metres. The solution was a Teupen Leo 30 M "spider" platform which was gently lowered into position from a tower crane. With its four outriggers in position the 4.4 tonne machine was operated electrically.
The steel erection is going to plan. Killelea is using its own trained operator to lift prefabricated roof sections into place, safe in the knowledge that the machine is stable. Says Darren Taylor of Killelea, "All other powered access machines that reach that high weigh a lot more - up to 16 tonnes. We needed something a lot lighter to work within a building."
