A pair of Nationwide Access Teupen Leo 30 telescopic booms are helping contractor Billington Structures fix the tubular steel roof beams at the new Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield, terminal building.
With four jack leg stabilisers, the Teupen Leo machines have a 30 metre reach which are being used for steel fixing inside the terminal. Weighing less than four and a half tonnes, the telescopic booms are light enough to work above a screeded concrete floor containing sub floor heating ducts.
The unusually shaped serpentine double ogee roof beams are lifted into place by an electric hoist while the two booms lift steel fixers to bolt them into place from the safety of a working platform. The terminal roof will be supported by 490 beams each weighing 300 kg.
Nationwide Access has helped speed up construction according to Karl Rogers Billington's site manager. "This is the first time I've used a Teupen Leo and I'll be using them a lot more from now on. They're more economical than a scissor lift as you do not have to keep moving them each time you install a beam. You simply extend and lower the boom."
