NATIONWIDE ACCESS PUTS
PARADISE WITHIN EASY REACH
Nationwide Access, the UK's largest supplier of powered access equipment, is playing a crucial role in the development of Liverpool's Paradise Street project, which is one of the most ambitious retail-led regeneration developments in Europe.

The £655m development will comprise around 154,000m² of new shops including flagship John Lewis and Debenhams stores. There are also plans for 38,000m² of leisure facilities including a multi-screen cinema, health and fitness centre, two hotels, restaurants, 465 new residential units and 3,000 car parking spaces.

Work on the massive 42-acre site is now well under way with the construction of the new John Lewis multi-story car park and the Canning Street bus station on target to complete towards the end of 2005. The innovative 2,000 space underground car park at Chevasse Park is also progressing well. The next major stage of the programme is the construction of the proposed Debenhams and John Lewis stores, which is expected to begin in the autumn.

To date, Nationwide Access has provided a number of articulated booms with up to 80' reach, which are being used by Steelforce Bowmech to erect the car park ramps and to assist with high-level welding operations in the multi-story car park. The machines have been on site since February and will remain in use until September.

Wayne Stevenson, Site Manager at Paradise Street for Steelforce Bowmech, said: "Using these machines is essential for accessing areas that we couldn't normally reach and for ensuring that we meet all the current health and safety legislation.

"On this project we need the machines to access and fix steelwork inside the building, which would otherwise be impossible."

In addition, two cherry pickers are being used by painting contractors E&P Coating to apply anti-carbon paint onto the multi-story car park walls to stop the fumes from car exhausts damaging them.

Paradise Street is being developed by Grosvenor and its funding partners and covers the equivalent area of 28 football pitches in the city centre. The project is due to complete in 2008, the year Liverpool will host the European Capital of Culture celebrations.
