NATIONWIDE ACCESS TAKES CENTRE STAGE IN TELFORD
Nationwide Access is playing an important role in tic stagecraft at The International Centre in Telford, Shropshire where the exhibition and conference venue is currently using four of Nationwide Access machines to help rig drapes, lighting and sound equipment for events. As a result of a five-year relationship with The International Centre, Nationwide Access now enjoys a level of trust with a client that is almost unparalleled within the plant hire industry.

According to Nationwide's District Operations Manager John Hall, "The Centre's needs are quite specific. They require very clean and reliable equipment. In fact, their needs are out of sync with 90% of the access industry's clients as it doesn't usually bring a contract to a halt if the machines are not in pristine condition. We have completely refurbished four machines cosmetically and mechanically so that they are as good as new."

The Centre comprises three large halls that have the flexibility to be split into smaller areas when the need arises. Large drapes are used to create smaller spaces within the halls. "You are talking about curtains that are worth about £2,000," adds John. "These are draped over the handrails of the machines during installation so it is not surprising that the client doesn't want machines with dried mud, soil or concrete on them."

The International Centre currently has two Z45 cherry pickers and two LX41 scissor lifts. All four have been supplied to the client in a bi-fuel format. This means they can operate either with the engine running or by battery power (with the engine off) so as to reduce fumes - an important factor when you are working indoors and in confined spaces.

Pete Wells, tic stagecraft general manager, says: "It is very important for the machines not to smoke or choke people out. These machines allow us a great deal of flexibility as we can reach anywhere we need to be within the 12.5m high apex and the ground."

The powered access machines are kept permanently on site under a bespoke agreement with Nationwide Access.

"We maintain tic as a virtual depot on our computer system," explains John. "There is a live diary where we keep track of when each machine is used. The working relationship between ourselves has been developed over the past five years and has never been stronger."
