SURGEONS GO STRAIGHT TO THE TOP OF
THE TREE WITH NATIONWIDE ACCESS
When the National Trust discovered one of the oldest trees at Belton House, near Grantham, Lincolnshire, was decaying and becoming unsafe; it made the tough decision to cut it down.

The 320-year-old ash tree measured 20m high and stood near a children's adventure playground. Instead of felling it, the Trust's tree surgeon, SRF Tree Specialists of Grantham, chose to dismantle it bit-by-bit to prevent damage to the surrounding area. This meant starting at the top and, to do this, SRF hired a 22m Skylift access platform from the UK's leading powered access rental company, Nationwide Access.

"If the tree's sound we don't need an access platform", says managing director of SRF Sean Ritchie. "But when a tree is rotten like this one, you cannot climb it or put any weight on it. Our clients often hire Nationwide Access machines for us to use, so when we needed to hire one, it made sense to go to a company we knew."

The removal of Belton House's ash tree is a large job, but one that can be done in one day using a long-reach access platform. The machine allowed the team to safely and easily reach every branch of the tree.

Nationwide Access's Skylift division specialises in truck mounted telescopic boom access platforms designed to travel quickly from job to job. The unit chosen by Mr Ritchie for this contract was mounted on a 13 tonne Volvo highlander 4 x 4 chassis, making it the ideal machine for this kind of job in the arboriculture market.

All-terrain boom lifts of this size are specialised machines and are relatively scarce in the UK.
