NATIONWIDE PROVIDES ACCESS TO TERMINAL FIVE
Nationwide Access, the UK's leading powered access hire specialist, has supplied 67 machines to contractor AMEC to carry out elements of the fit-out work at the departure area of Heathrow's new Terminal 5.

AMEC's Building and facilities Services division is installing cable trays and associated electrical and mechanical equipment for the building's lighting and power systems as part of its Building Services contract.

Nationwide has been supplying equipment to a number of contractors on the massive £4.2 billion project for the past year. At present there are approximately 220 Nationwide Access self-propelled boom and scissor lifts at work on Terminal 5.

"Roughly one-third of the machines we have supplied at Heathrow are boom lifts like the Genie 45" says Nationwide marketing manager Scott McCall. The Genie 45 is a diesel-electric 'bi-energy' machine with a maximum working height of 15 metres and is used in areas where reach over obstructions is required.

"However, the majority of Nationwide machines at T5 are narrow-width electric scissor lifts such as the Genie GS19 which is less than one metre wide and has a working height of 8 m" adds Mr McCall. "These machines are both lightweight and narrow allowing them to be used in both confined areas and on mezzanine floors."

Terminal 5 is currently on budget and on schedule to open in Spring 2008. As the structures for the terminal buildings are mainly complete, work is currently concentrated on mechanical and electrical services "We envisage having machines working on T5 for the remainder of construction before hopefully supplying equipment for the maintenance of the building", says Mr McCall.
