It's nice to be beside the seaside, but when the roof of Royal Mail's Blackpool Sorting Office was under siege from thousands of seagulls and pigeons, something had to be done.
First Response Environmental Services Ltd was called in to set up bird deterrent nets around the building on Edward Street to prevent problems caused by the nesting birds' droppings blocking gutters and fouling the building and paving below. To complete the task quickly and efficiently, First Response hired a 22 metre, 660SJ diesel-powered Boom Lift from Nationwide Access, the UK's largest provider of powered access equipment. As well as good working height the machine offers outreach of 17.30 metres and continuous rotation; making it ideal for awkward access points.
Steve Hornby, from First Response, said: "Using the 22 metre boom gave us easy and quick access to the two side elevations of the post office building and provided a more cost effective and flexible option than traditional scaffolding.
"Bird deterrent nets had to be fixed onto the walls on Queen Vera Road and Edward Street, which were 65 metres and 25 metres long. The boom lift allowed the completion of the installation on one part of the wall and then easy movement to the next position."
Using powered access allowed First Response to complete the job in five days. As there was no scaffolding on site, the nets were fixed to the walls without physical obstacle caused by scaffolding. This negated the need to revisit parts of the site to carry out snagging work once the scaffold had been dropped.
Powered access is now being chosen over scaffolding in many cases not just to speed up the job, but to also make the site safer. Scaffolding can form an ideal access point for intruders or a playground for young children, by using powered access equipment both of these risks are substantially reduced.
Steve Hornby added: "Nationwide Access offers an extensive range of machines and the nationwide depot network means we can always obtain machines quickly and easily. We have always enjoyed a quick and efficient service."
